Online Dating Sites: Who’s The Best?
Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Julie Spira and Dr. Dale Koppel: That’s amazing.
Julie, the people that we at Intersections Match work with tend to be successful, educated, family-oriented and fit men and women. Are there any particular online sites that you tend to recommend for 30 or 40-somethings who meet this demographic?
_____
Julie Spira
Online Dating Sites: eHarmony
One of the most popular sites that is geared towards marriage-minded singles is eHarmony. They do a fabulous job.
The people that sign up for eHarmony are very committed to the process. They will fill out a very long questionnaire. It’s called a personality profiling.
If someone’s going to take the time to fill out a questionnaire that may take them a half hour and they’re paying $30, $40 or $50 a month, they are more committed to the process in meeting someone serious.
Dr. Koppel, did you have any thoughts on that with respect to particular online sites for the kind of demographic I mentioned?
Dr. Dale Koppel
Online Dating Sites: Match.com
I’m biased towards Match.com. I was on Match. That’s where I met my Mr. Right. I had greater success on that site.
Online Dating Sites: JDate for Men
I had also been on JDate. I thought Match offered me a much broader base of men to choose from. I did not want to go on eHarmony. I considered it.
What I like about Match and the other sites is that you do the picking yourself.
I think I would have been frustrated with a site like eHarmony because they do the picking for you.
I would always have said to myself, “Who is the man that I didn’t get to meet?” I wanted to be much more in control of my destiny. That’s why I preferred Match.
That’s interesting. I love having these different perspectives.

Online Dating Sites: Match.com
I have to tell you that I agree with Dale about Match.com.
Match.com has gained their position because they really have offered something for everyone.
There are so many couples that meet and get married on Match.com because of their large dating pool.
There are also a lot of people on Match.com who are looking for fun and hooking up. There is a little bit of everything. It really does run the gamut.
Match.com does a terrific job and it is easy to use. What we’re finding out now, and what I found out at the Internet Dating Conference in January, is that personality profiling has become very popular. A lot of these sites are starting to come up with these questionnaires that eHarmony and Chemistry.com are so well-known for.
Online Dating Sites: Personality Tests
For instance, JDate just launched their Color Personality Test. What color are you?
I took my color test. I turned out to be yellow. That allows the users to engage with the site for a longer period of time. They tend to spend more time on the site.
People are enjoying these personality tests. They like to figure out, “Who am I really compatible with? I don’t want to waste six months of my life with the wrong guy.”
That’s interesting.
Online Dating Sites: eHarmony for the Shy
Dr. Dale Koppel
One thing that I mention when I do workshops is that eHarmony is especially good for people who are a little shy about putting themselves out there.
If you go on a site where you’re the one who is going to be choosing, you really want to be the person who is making the first move. That takes a certain personality.
I know that’s not necessarily what you’re pointing out, Julie. I just wanted to add this in favor of eHarmony.
I think it’s very good for people who either don’t have the time to do it themselves beyond the personality profiling or who are shy and would like someone else to do it for them.
