Most Marriages Start Online

Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Dr. John Cacioppo: Your results revealed that a large proportion of marriages in this country now begin online. What did you find?

Dr. John Cacioppo

Most Marriages Start Online: 35%

We were really surprised. About 35% of the marriages between 2005 and 2012 began online. That’s a dramatic increase in the number of such marriages.

One of the things that this implies is that online meetings are not as stigmatized as they were even a decade and a half ago.

Most Marriages Start Online: Older Age Group

Our research showed that the people who were more likely to meet online were those who are better educated, with higher income and between 30 and 39 years of age.

In short, it’s those who didn’t have a lot of spare time for leisure. They were using the internet as a means of communicating and meeting spouses or matches because they had so little time to go through the normal offline venues.
