Men Want Smart Women

Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Dr. Christine B. Whelan, author of Why Smart Men Marry Smart Women: We’re very excited to have you. As a professional matchmaker and dating coach, I’m fascinated by insights and perspectives regarding relationships.

Given that our clientele largely consists of highly educated and accomplished men and women, I’ve especially enjoyed reading both of your books. I’d love to explore some of the insights shared by you.

Dr. Whelan, before exploring those insights, why don’t you share with our listeners what prompted you to write these two books in the first place?

Dr. Christine Whelan

Like many of your listeners, I was living in New York City. I had just finished my doctoral dissertation and I was very much single.

No Intimidation, Men Want Smart Women

I read an article by Maureen Dowd in the New York Times that said that men were intimidated by smart, successful women. Men wouldn’t look for a woman like me.

I thought, “This is really a problem. I’ve somehow over-educated myself and I’m never going to get married. At least I should get a book out of it.”

The Switch: Men Want Smart Women

Initially, I pitched my agent on a bad news book. I was going to call it Overqualified for Love. It was going to be about how high achieving women never got married.

Before I was going to sell the book, I thought that I really needed to do some research. My background is in sociology and social history. I pulled all the recent data and I got very confused.

I found that, in fact, Maureen Dowd was wrong.

High-achieving women were marrying at the same rates, if not at higher rates, than all other women.

The News is Out! Men Want Smart Women

Instead of writing a bad news book, I ended up writing a good news book. It was a book of empowerment that shatters this myth that so many of us smart women have been raised with.

It was the first good news book for smart, successful women to embrace their intelligence.

I wanted them to realize that no, in fact, we are not overqualified for love. We are just the kind of women that men are really looking for.
