Evolution of Online Dating: Internet Boom
(5:58): I think the biggest difference that I can share with you is that, when I first joined an online dating site in 1994, there weren’t a lot of people online. There weren’t even a lot of people with email addresses at that time.
There was a huge stigma associated with online dating. When I first signed up and put up my first profile in 1994, Match.com didn’t even exist yet.
I went on Love at AOL. That was my first introduction to online dating.
Evolution of Online Dating: Dating Pool
The dating pool was much smaller. I felt embarrassed. I said, “I can’t tell anybody I’m doing this. Isn’t this supposed to be for losers?” I kept my mouth shut because there really was a certain stigma associated with online dating.
Now, if you look at the online dating industry today, you’ll see that every single major media outlet did a piece on Valentine’s Day on online dating.
To have the phone ring constantly for quotes for online dating stories has now become a popular, regular way of living your life.
Evolution of Online Dating: New Norm
If you go on a date now, someone will say, “You had a date last night. What site did you meet him on?” That wouldn’t have happened 15 years ago.
