The Love Story Before the Bollywood Proposal

We met in 1999 on the internet. This was when online dating on the internet was very young.

There was a lot of stigma attached to it. I don’t even remember the name of the website. It’s probably not in existence anymore. It was an Indian matrimonial dating site.

I was dating people that I’d met when I was living in LA. I went on there out of curiosity more than anything else. Almost right away, I met Anita. We have been married for 13 years now.

Bollywood Proposal, The Dream

Thank you. We dated for a few months and I was planning on asking her to marry me.

I remember her saying more than once that she had this secret dream that the guy who married her would propose to her in a meadow. There would be Bollywood singing and dancing. She was joking, of course.

Anyone who knows me knows that I like to do things over the top sometimes.

Bollywood Proposal, The Execution

We were on a date. I said, “I want to show you a really special place. I need you to put on a blindfold and I’ll take you there.”

I don’t know if you know the geography of LA. There is this place called Point Fermin Park in San Pedro. Above it is a very beautiful park on a hill with a giant bell there called the Korean Bell of Friendship. It was given to the United States by Korea. There is a 280 degree view of the ocean and coastline.

I thought that the park would be fairly deserted by dusk. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

I had my little plan. I took her out to the middle of the park. I took her blindfold off. I was literally Bollywood singing and dancing right there in my kurta.
