The research on this is very clear and it’s a little bit disappointing in some ways. It’s just the way human nature is.
Attraction to Online Profiles: Men
The stereotypes about what men and women are interested in turn out to be true, so the best on-average men care about how women look.
That’s the number one thing that drives their interest in women, who they send messages to and who they want to date.
Attraction to Online Profiles: Women
Women are interested in how much money men make.
Again, you know there are women who care much more about looks and other things.
If you take the broad pattern of the most predictive factor of what women are interested in, it’s how much money the man makes.
Attraction to Online Profiles: Single-Sex Sites
This is on heterosexual sites. Things might work out a little differently on single-sex sites.
The research hasn’t been done yet in regard to single-sex sites. On heterosexual sites, those two stereotypes hold quite clearly in the data.
Attraction to Online Profiles: What To Do
If you want to appear attractive and you’re a woman, make sure your picture looks good.
If you’re a man, making more money isn’t the worst thing. Being clear that you have a fair amount of money without being ostentatious about it on your dating profile is going to help and at least get you first dates.
Then you also have to be a decent person.
