Cheat Meals: Indulge Twice!

Jasbina Ahluwalia asks Jackie Warner, author of This is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever): That’s excellent. Your second simple rule is that deprivation doesn’t work. You mentioned that in terms of keeping your foods and adding foods on top of that.

Is there anything else that you wanted to add about that second rule of deprivation not working?

Cheat Meals: Two Times the Fun

I’m the only fitness professional that allows you two cheat meals. I’m the only one who allows that.

I enacted that about eight years ago in my career. I would say, “You have to eat clean and eat well.”

Cheat Meals: From One to Two

Basically, what I was telling them to do was to diet for six days in a row. Then they were allowed one cheat meal.

One cheat meal a week for the rest of their lives? Come on. That does not work. That is not a lifestyle change.

Cheat Meals: No Deprivation

I started thinking about how powerful the brain is and how it’s so resistant to deprivation.

I said, “Let me try to add in a second cheat meal.” I tell you to eat five days clean, preferably Monday through Friday for your work week.

On the sixth and the seventh day, you allow yourself a cheat meal.

Cheat Meals: Burgers and Ice Cream!

Get this. You have up to 1500 calories each day. That’s a substantial cheat meal. That could be a burger, fries and a beer. That could be getting a pint of Haagen Dazs with something else.

It’s substantial.

One meal could be up to 1500 calories during these two cheat days. That’s what you’re talking about?

Jackie Warner

Exactly. That’s on the sixth and seventh day.

Cheat Meals: Motivation

I gave them that sixth and seventh day of cheat meals. Everyone started responding really well to that.

They started to say, “I can do this because the light is at the end of the tunnel. For five days in a row, I can eat clean, keep sugar at five grams and under knowing that I’m going to go out with my friends drinking on Saturday night. Then Sunday, I can wake up and have brunch.”

That’s a lifestyle. That’s not deprivation. It is really highly effective. It works for people.
