I like using the examples of communication around dating because that’s where a lot of your personality is translated to the other person. You may not even realize it.

Controlling of Communication: Scheduling

Here is an example of controlling in communication.

Let’s say that a guy calls you that you haven’t had a date with before. He’s really putting himself on the line to possibly be rejected.

You’re on the other line and you get the call. You could let it go to voicemail, which is probably what I would recommend.

Instead, you pick up the phone. Your voice sounds a little curt and rude because you know that you have this person on the other line.

You say, “Hi. I’m on the other line. Can you call me back between 6:00 and 9:00 tonight? Now I’m going out and I won’t be around until later. Call me back at 6:00 but not later than 9:00 because I’m going to be going to bed.”

Controlling of Communication Comes off Rude

That’s controlling. Even though a lot of women will say, “I was trying to be accommodating so that he could catch me at a good time,” it comes across as controlling.

It’s amazing how many people do this and don’t even realize what a bad message it sends.
